Choosing a domain name for your Author Website is crucial.  The key question we always ask is whether it is best to create a domain based on the title of the book or based upon the author’s name.  The answer, simply put, is both.  As an author, you are trying to establish an identity.  You are beginning the essential process of creating a platform for you and your book (or books).  The key component in either case is exposure.  A website is meant to be a marketing device on the one hand, but it is also meant to be a place where readers can come and feel at home. They want to get to know you as a person. What you think, what you feel, who you are.

Choosing a domain based upon the title of your book makes it easy for a reader to remember; unless of course you’ve got a title such as The Book About Everything and Anything Every Invented Since the Dawn of Time.  Yep, a little too long.  But you could make it “www.TheBookAboutEverythingandAnything.com”. At the same time, you can also register a domain based upon your author name, like, “www.DorothySmith.com”.  This doesn’t mean that you have two different author websites; your web designer can direct both domains to the same site.

A couple of other standard tips:

Make sure your author website focuses as much on content as it does design. Content attracts your visitor to your site and content keeps them interested.

Make sure your author website is NOT solely an advertising site. A visitor can tell in a heartbeat is all you’re trying to do is sell them a book.  Yes, that may be one of your goals, but it cannot be the sole goal.

Short and simple is generally the way to go when choosing a domain name. The reasons are obvious.

When it comes to keywords, make sure you’re using ones the describe your book, your genre, your audience, and you.

Last but not least, don’t wait to secure a domain name.  They go fact.  The good news is that they are generally inexpensive. So don’t wait.
